Penguin at Harewood House Bird Garden

As well as being a beautiful stately home, Harewood House also has an extensive bird garden, which includes a modest penguinarium. Although the sex of Humboldt Penguins cannot be determined by appearance, this is a male - the sex has been previously determined by staff and indicated with a marker on his left flipper. Females will be tagged on the right.

Alien "UFO" Rods at Harewood House

These alien rods (see Link

) were captured on digital camera at Harewood House on a warm spring afternoon. They are of course not bizarre alien creatures as some believe, but flies, captured in the relatively fast time exposure of the camera. Amazingly, there are many people who believe that these are alien creatures that can only be seen in video and photographs. The clue's there in the last sentence ladies and gents... I first heard about these "rods" in a documentary by Fox shown on Sky which was presented as serious scientific research, though their "image expert" sounded pretty clueless to me. Seriously though, I nearly laughed myself off the seat at times, but at other times I was angered by the way the "facts" were being presented. These incidentally are the same people who brought us the documentary proving that man didn't go to the moon. I guess if there's money to be made selling books...

These gates give access to the Harewood Estate from the A61 (by the turning to Wike). The gate piers, quadrant walls, railings and gates are all Grade 2 listed. The Leeds Country Way (a route which encircles Leeds) comes through these gates.

A bridge which crosses the beck leading to the Harewood Fish Pond. It carries a public footpath / bridle path (and the Leeds Country Way), but is not open to vehicles - the Land Rover is one of the Harewood Estate vehicles.
