Mill Lochs is a picturesque freshwater system situated in the beautiful Shetland Islands, located off the northeastern coast of Scotland. Comprising of three interconnected lochs - North, Central, and South Mill Lochs - it stretches over an area of approximately 160 hectares. These lochs are formed by the accumulation of rainwater in natural depressions and are surrounded by rolling hills and verdant vegetation.

The Mill Lochs are renowned for their exceptional biodiversity and provide crucial habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. The crystal-clear waters of the lochs support an abundance of freshwater fish species, including brown trout and three-spined stickleback. These fish provide a vital food source for various bird species that inhabit the area, such as the common tern, whooper swan, and tufted duck.

The surrounding marshes and wetlands offer a haven for numerous bird species, both resident and migratory. Reed buntings, snipes, and lapwings can be spotted among the reeds and grasses, while the arrival of migratory birds like red-throated divers and Arctic terns during the summer months adds to the diversity of avian life.

The Mill Lochs are also home to an array of aquatic plants, including water lilies, pondweeds, and water horsetails. These plants not only provide shelter and breeding grounds for aquatic organisms but also contribute to the overall ecological balance of the lochs.

Due to its ecological significance, Mill Lochs has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is managed by various conservation organizations. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil surroundings by embarking on guided walks, bird-watching expeditions, or simply taking in the breathtaking views from the designated observation points.

One of the Giants' stones at Hamnavoe I don't wish to be unkind, but it seems to me that these must have been rather small giants.
