''May the force be with you'' (2) One of two double thrusters just starting to increase the speed of IOMSP HSC Mannanan on its voyage to Douglas IOM. Currently it is restricted to 5 knots whilst in the Mersey. At one point it reached 31 knots (35.7 mph) in moderate seas. It is capable of much more but this increases fuel consumption, something not favoured in these time of high energy prices.

The Ferry, a popular public house overlooking the River Mersey The Ferry pub dates from at least 1850, and was acquired by Higsons in 1901 who changed its name to the Egremont Ferry in 1925. It was described in 1980 as a popular riverside local selling Higsons Mild and Bitter by handpump. Renovated in 2018.

Stanley Dock warehouse The enormous brick building is a former tobacco bond. This is Grade II Listed and is the world's biggest brick built warehouse. Constructed in 1901 it is 14 storeys high and used 27 million bricks. It has now been converted to apartments and the centre has been hollowed out to create a central courtyard.

Huskisson Dock impounding station, Liverpool We 'blagged' our way past security to take a look at this very derelict pumping station. The hoarding preventing access had fallen over and I am stood on the stairs leading down to the flooded basement level. The building contained four J & H Gwynne inverted vertical tandem compound steam engines driving centrifugal pumps. This has now been demolished but one engine (without the pump) is in the open air by the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Liverpool Waste Water Treatment Works, Sandon Dock and Wellington Dock I struggled to make sense of this photograph and I now know that since I took it the dock in the view has been filled in and built over. Further research has shown the water to be in Wellington Dock and United Utilities were given permission to extend over this dock in 2012 (and it was filled in 2012). All is now clear. The waste water works seen here was already on the filled in Sandon Dock.

Sandon Half Tide Dock Liverpool On the right is the passage to Huskisson Dock. The blue swing bridge has since been removed. The white pylon is the base of a wind turbine. The MV Altea was built in 1962 in the Netherlands as a general cargo vessel but when seen in 2010 was owned by the UK Government and used as a training ship for Border Forces National Deep Rummage Team. It was put up for auction in 2014 and its subsequent fate is not known to me.

Sandon Half Tide Dock Liverpool The blue bridge crosses the channel to Huskisson Dock and was in the open position. The sheds are in Huskisson Dock. A blade on a wind turbine is seen top left. The vessel is Scan Scarab registered in Fleetwood and is a salvage vessel built by Charles D Holmes in Beverley in 1971. I do not know what its current status is.
