Achiemore Pool, located in Sutherland, Scotland, is a picturesque freshwater marsh nestled in the heart of the region. Spanning approximately 2.5 acres, this tranquil pool offers a serene and idyllic environment for both visitors and local wildlife alike.

The pool itself is fed by a small stream originating from the nearby hills, ensuring a constant supply of clean, freshwater. Surrounded by lush vegetation, including reeds, rushes, and water lilies, Achiemore Pool provides a diverse and rich habitat for a variety of plant and animal species.

Birdwatchers will be delighted by the wide range of avian species that call Achiemore Pool their home or make a stopover during migration. Visitors can spot common waterfowl such as mallards and tufted ducks, as well as more elusive species like herons and curlews. The pool also attracts a variety of songbirds, including warblers and finches.

Apart from its avian inhabitants, Achiemore Pool is also home to several fish species, including brown trout and perch. These fish, along with the ample insect life, provide a food source for larger predators such as otters and herons, which can occasionally be observed hunting in and around the pool.

For visitors seeking a peaceful retreat or an opportunity to connect with nature, Achiemore Pool offers a tranquil setting surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Whether it's birdwatching, fishing, or simply enjoying the serene atmosphere, Achiemore Pool is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Strath Halladale: postbox № KW13 51 This small postbox is referred to on the box as "postbox no. 51 Mickleburn" although I can find no record of the name Mickleburn on the map here. The box does not appear on the Royal Mail's list but there is no doubt it is here!

The box is emptied, according to the information plate, at 11am each day (except Sunday) so, since it is after that time on a Monday and the indicator says Tuesday, the postman is obviously aware of its existence!

Loch na Caorach Moorland and the northern end of Loch na Caorach. The foreground and the first 100 metres of the loch are within this grid square. The flatness of the terrain makes it difficult not to get a lot of the surrounding grid squares in shot (plus rather a lot of sky). The lack of features also makes judging distances difficult, the far skyline is only 5km away.
