Coney Wood

Glossams Place, Beckley Glossams Place in Beckley Woods was an early medieval moated manor house, dating from about 1100. Little more than that fact of its existence has been known about it, until the Hastings Area Archaeological Research Group began to excavate the site a few years ago. Now much of the floor plan has been discovered and some indications of how life was lived there have been uncovered. The locality was also a Roman era ironworking site, and large amounts of slag can be found lying about.

Coney Wood is a picturesque woodland located in the county of Sussex, England. Spanning over a vast area, the wood is nestled amidst the rolling countryside, offering a tranquil and scenic escape for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike.

The woodland is characterized by its diverse range of tree species, including oak, beech, ash, and birch, which create a dense canopy overhead. This not only provides a shaded and cool environment but also supports a rich variety of flora and fauna. Bluebells, foxgloves, and wild garlic carpet the forest floor in the spring, while birds such as woodpeckers, thrushes, and finches find sanctuary among the treetops.

The wood is crisscrossed by a network of well-maintained footpaths and trails, making it easily accessible for walkers, joggers, and dog walkers. These paths lead visitors through enchanting groves, past babbling brooks, and to hidden clearings, perfect for picnics or simply taking in the peaceful surroundings.

Coney Wood also holds historical significance, with remnants of ancient earthworks and burial mounds dotting the landscape. Archaeological discoveries suggest that the wood was inhabited during the Iron Age, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the site.

Managed by local conservation organizations, Coney Wood is carefully preserved to protect its natural beauty and ecological importance. Regular maintenance and upkeep ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy the wood's serenity and admire the wonders of Sussex's countryside for generations to come.

Track Rooted by Wild Boars, Waterfall Wood A popular spot for Wild Boars to root around the grassy track for grubs and worms. A lot of hoofprints heading into the cover of the trees either side too. Boars are nocturnal tending to come out at dusk. Boars first reappeared in this after the great storms of 1987 and 1991 believed to have escaped from a commercial farm near Tenterden. Since then they have slowly grown in number and are spreading to other nearby woods in their search for food. The result of their rooting is to enable plants such as violet, fleabane and creeping buttercup to colonise the disturbed soil. Boars are not dangerous unless they feel endangered themselves, if you provoke a sow with a new born litter then you will need to learn to climb trees fast.
