Substantial locked steel gate

Set in a strong fence tipped with sharp prongs, we had to scale this gate to escape from the industrial and scrapyard area behind. This is a new barrier, and has appeared in the last year or two. The area north of here used to be the derelict railway sidings of the old Point of Ayr Colliery.

Sand in the Dee Estuary at low tide

At low tide, I am standing south of the stream shown on the map, on the sandspit which extends roughly E. then S.E. from the Point of Ayr. Looking up the estuary, the low hills in the right distance are around Holywell. Another smaller stream shows as a dark line just below the R.H. horizon.

This river runs through delightful ancient woodland owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. Nearby is a stone lined adit dating back to 1780 - driven to drain water from the former Trelogan lead mine.

Disused Mineshaft

A bit of the field that the farmer cannot plough - this mound hides a mineshaft from the former Trelogan lead and zinc mine which operated from the 18th until the early 20th century.
