Egremont: site of former station, 1994

View NE at the roundabout on the A595 Barrow- Whitehaven road. The station had been just up to the left here: ex-LNW & Furness Joint, Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont line; Moor Row (to left) - Sellafield (to right). The station (and line) had a complex history, being first closed to passengers 7/1/35, but reopened for workmen 11/3/40, for the public 6/5/46 - 16/6/47, but again for workmen 23/5/49 - 6/9/65, for schools 3/3/69. It and the line remained for goods until 15/6/72. (!)

Clints Quarry NNR

The quarry is a scheduled Site of Special Scientific Interest and is of considerable botanical importance as well as geological. The fallen blocks of stone that may be seen contain a variety of fossils – Brachiopods and corals. Clints was mentioned in a 1909 prospectus for the Workington Iron & Steel Company. The limestone which was easily quarried, was used in blast furnaces to make steel in the heyday of the Acid Bessemer process between 1850 and 1890. It was transported from the quarry by rail from a siding off the L & N.W. Junction Railway.

Clints Quarry Bridge

This bridge once allowed the quarry siding to link up with the London & North Western (and Furness, Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont) Junction Railway next to the Ehen Valley Siding. Limestone was then taken from here to the blast furnaces at Workington Iron & Steel Works. Quarrying ceased in 1930 and the track was soon taken up, so now only the bridge remains.
