Appleby Coke Ovens, Appleby Frodingham Steelworks The main coke oven battery is across the back of this view in front of the chimney. A benzole storage tank is on the left. These coke ovens are to close about mid-2023 and the coke for steel making will then be imported. It is apparently cheaper to do this than import coal and pay carbon tax. I am very glad I was on one of the railway trips around site while these are still working.

Former Bonds Heavy Castings, Dawes Lane, Scunthorpe This business was alongside the Appleby Frodingham Steelworks of British steel. This was originally built as a munitions factory and when owned by Firth Brown was involved in 'bouncing bomb'production. It appears that Bonds went into receivership but it is believed a new use is being found for the site in metal processing.

When the coke works closes in mid-2023 this coal will no longer be required and coke will be being imported, but possibly by a different route.

Appleby Frodingham Steel Works - reused boiler A former Lancashire boiler that has been converted to a tank resulting in the unusual appearance of the flues being joined together. Behind are some iron ore wagons that are massively built to carry the dense mineral. Beyond would have been the heavy plate mill but that has now been demolished leaving a big space in the site.

Appleby coke Ovens - quench in progress The coke ovens are on the British Steel Appleby Frodingham site and due to close mid-2023. The coke will then be imported and it will cost less (madness!). The plume of steam is caused by quenching red-hot coke fresh from the ovens with water. This prevents the coke just igniting and burning away. In the foreground is where the heavy plate mill has been demolished.

Appleby Coke Ovens - the battery This shows the pushing side of the coke oven battery and the pushing machine is the red device seen in the distance through a tangle of pipe supports. The coke is discharged on the other side and fresh coal is loaded from the top. Various warning signs state no mobile phones, no smoking and intrinsically safe radios only. Fortunately you can't smell it in this image. The coke oven will close mid-2023 and coke for the blast furnaces will then be imported.

Appleby Coke Ovens, Appleby Frodingham Steelworks The brick structure to the right is the quench tower with its cooling water tank top right. The main coke oven battery is behind the chimney with the pusher side to the left. The quench tower is aligned to the right of the battery where the coke is discharged into special cars that are pushed under the tower by a locomotive. On my previous visit in 2018 the lighting on this side was truly awful but it was a duller day this time and that helped. The coke ovens are closing mid-2023.

Appleby Coke Ovens - by-products plant Most of this view is clean up and byproduct recovery. There is a road tanker filling station on the right with a warning about static electricity and earthing straps. The red brick building probably includes exhauster +/- gas booster plant. The concrete bunker feeds coal to the coke ovens.
