View across the field to Black Firs Black Firs is a former peat bog, drained in the 1800s. The complex system of concentric drainage ditches is still evident. Although there are some mature trees from the original planting the woodland has become more ‘natural’ in recent years with species such as alder, oak, birch and sycamore. Some indication of the former fen vegetation can be seen along some of the wetter ditches which retain water for much of the year.

The site is now managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. Gorstyhill The pub, the Broughton Arms, has a Cheshire address and was in Cheshire until 1965, when the boundary was moved to make Gorstyhill and Balterley Heath into a single community. I was standing on the current boundary to take the photo. The road to the left, the B5500, used to be the A52.

The chapel at Englesea-brook No ordinary chapel, this is "the birthplace of Primitive Methodism". For more information, see <span class="nowrap"><a title="http://www.engleseabrook-museum.org.uk/" rel="nofollow ugc noopener" href="http://www.engleseabrook-museum.org.uk/">Link</a><img style="margin-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="https://s1.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/></span>.

(By the way, the odd spelling/punctuation of the village name is correct.)

Barthomley The White Lion must be one of the most traditional pubs in Britain. You get the impression that nothing's changed there for several decades. We were there with friends who live in the village and the atmosphere is great: everyone seems to know everyone else and cars and people are constantly stopping for someone to have a chat.
