The Forest of Dean is a picturesque woodland area located in the county of Gloucestershire, England. Spanning over 42 square miles, it is one of the few remaining ancient forests in the country. The forest is known for its diverse ecosystem, rich wildlife, and historical significance.

The forest is primarily composed of oak and beech trees, although it also features other tree species such as birch, ash, and yew. This dense woodland provides the perfect habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, badgers, foxes, and numerous species of birds. The forest is also home to the rare lesser horseshoe bat, which finds refuge in the forest's limestone caves.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Forest of Dean has a rich history. It was historically used for hunting by royalty and has also been a site for iron and coal mining. The remnants of these industries can still be seen today in the form of old mine shafts and quarries scattered throughout the area. The forest also played a significant role in the production of charcoal, which was used in the local iron industry.

Today, the Forest of Dean is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, cycling, and horse riding. There are numerous trails and paths that crisscross the forest, allowing visitors to explore its beauty at their own pace. The forest is also home to several visitor centers, where tourists can learn more about its history, wildlife, and conservation efforts.

Pump bob - Foxes Bridge Colliery near Cinderford This inverted tee bob was undoubtedly associated with a steam pumping engine for draining this colliery and has been retained on site on a specially made concrete pad. Unfortunately it is being reclaimed by nature and is fairly well hidden although there is a well established path to it. It took me a while of hunting to find it from the nearby cycle trail.

Site of Foxes Bridge Colliery This shows a concrete footing in the foreground with an inverted tee bob from a pumping installation in the background. This latter had been erected on a ne concrete pad. Unfortunately nature is claiming it back. There are similar pieces at New Fancy colliery but not as well preserved or presented.
