Ship Stack is a small uninhabited island located off the coast of Shetland, an archipelago in Scotland. Also known as The Ship, it is situated approximately 3 miles northeast of Sumburgh Head, the southernmost point of the Shetland mainland. This unique island gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles an upturned ship.

Ship Stack is a sea stack, a tall narrow rock formation that rises vertically from the sea. It stands at an impressive height of around 50 meters (164 feet) and is composed of sandstone, which is characteristic of the geology in the area. The island is surrounded by rough waters and can only be accessed by boat, making it an inaccessible and challenging destination for visitors.

Due to its isolated location, Ship Stack is an important nesting site for seabirds, particularly puffins and guillemots. The steep cliffs provide ideal nesting ledges, where these birds can safely lay their eggs and raise their young. The island is also home to other bird species, including fulmars and kittiwakes.

Ship Stack is a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts who visit the Shetland Islands. Although the island itself cannot be accessed, it can be admired from the sea or from nearby viewpoints on the mainland. Its striking shape and the bustling bird colonies that inhabit it make Ship Stack a captivating sight for those exploring the rugged and beautiful coastline of Shetland.
