St. Lucia - Drive-in Volcano Near Soufriere and the Pitons on St. Lucia, is the world's only 'drive-in volcano'. It is the caldera of the dormant Qualibou volcano. In the center of the caldera are small mud volcanoes and sulfur springs. If you have the time, you can soak in the mud baths. By the way, Soufriere means 'sulfur air'. Quite appropriate, as the sulfur smell is quite strong.

The Gathering Storm ~ Castries, St Lucia St. Lucia's largest city is Castries, its current capital, and its second largest is Soufrière, the first French colonial capital on the island. The French were the first Europeans to settle on the island. They signed a treaty with the native Island Caribs in 1660. England took control of the island from 1663 to 1667. In ensuing years, it was at war with France 14 times, and the rule of the island changed frequently. In 1814, the British took control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the "Helen of the West" after the Greek mythological character, Helen of Troy.
St. Lucia - St. Marks Colonial Mansion We visited Castries, St. Lucia on the Carnival Victory in October 2012. We took a shore excursion that included a visit to St. Marks, a colonial mansion built on the hills above the city. The house is owned by the same family that built it. Since the family still lives in the house, we only visited the public rooms on the first floor. We had complimentary snacks (delicious) and a beverage on the back porch. Since the family still lives in the house, we only visited the public rooms on the first floor. We had complimentary snacks (delicious) and a beverage on the back porch.
