The hangar to the right is now the the Air Force Museum and the aircraft are parked in what now is the museum car park. Four RNZAF Skyhawks had landed at Wigram the previous week, 23 Nov 1983. The taxiway was already sealed in 1972 and was capable of taking A-4 Skyhawks and did so whenever called upon to provide a static display at Wigram. Until 1940, the airfield at Wigram was grass. In 1940 an unsealed gravel taxiway was built around the airfield perimeter allowing easier movement and control of aircraft and vehicles. However take-offs and landings were still done on the grass, and rainy weather often meant a cancellation of flying due to flooding. The situation was improved in 1941 when 25 miles of field tiles were laid across the flying area to assist drainage. Although part of the taxiway was later used as a runway, it was not until 1989 that work started on a properly constructed runway designed to meet Defence transport air needs into the 21st Century.
