Peak Forest Canal - Woodley Tunnel north end, 1984

The two proper tunnels on the Peak Forest Canal differ in design, this is narrow and high but has a towpath through, Hyde Bank Tunnel does not and is wide and low.

Shops on Market Street

Hyde Convenience Store was A&M Multisaver SJ9594 : Changes on Market Street. The premises originally belonged to the "Philanthropic Mutual Life Assurance Collecting Society". Faded lettering of the name on the top of the façade was still visible in 2006 SJ9594 : Philanthropic Society but had gone by 2009 SJ9594 : Established 1830. The doormat in the entrance however still has the name "Philanthropic" on it SJ9594 : Philanthropic doormat. It has been part of the Premier franchise (owned by Tesco) but the name has been covered over on the signage. Maybe it is about to be rebranded. Next door was a single shop DP Flooring which was later split into two shops. One was YT Electronics and the other was being sold as an "investment property". YT Electronics has gone and is now Nakshi, an ethnic fashion shop. The other shop remains shuttered. Above these is the former Crown Inn, now the Rose Beauty Salon SJ9594 : Rose Beauty Salon who are the sixth business to occupy the premises since it closed in 2009.

#159 is the G D Hair & Beauty Salon. Previous businesses registered at this address include Anmel Technology & Consultants Ltd, Combined Motor Services Ltd and Whytes Investments Ltd. #161 had looked rather derelict for a while but was renovated in 2020 and opened up as Flying Carpets. SJ9594 : 159-163 Market Street, Hyde. Now it seems they too have flown.. Previous businesses registered at this address include Abbeyford Construction Ltd, PDB Enterprises Ltd and Sobrinca Nursery Products. #163 was recently Clean Lymph SJ9594 : 159-163 Market Street, Hyde which offered manual lymphatic drainage therapy Previous businesses registered at this address include Xcellsim PLC, MSF Easy Solutions Ltd, The Wardrobe SJ9594 : 159-163 Market Street, which closed in 2017 SJ9594 : The Wardrobe closed and Skin Perfect SJ9594 : 159-163 Market Street, Hyde. Now it seems to be carrying advertising banners for Open House property sales and Noblestocks. The latter appears to be an online fashion website based in Huddersfield.

Borough Arcade

Borough Arcade leads from Market Street to Clarendon Street alongside the former Hippodrome Cinema. The upper storeys are now occupied by the Powerhouse gymnasium SJ9494 : Powerhouse Gym. On the ground floor is what used to be "Angie's Crafts" SJ9495 : Closing down sale on Borough Arcade. For a while it became a learning centre called "in2wrk". SJ9494 : Borough Arcade. Now it is a charity shop and cafe called "Helping Hands" run by the local Methodist Church circuit. Next door is the entrance to the former "Clarendon Dental Practice" now "{my}dentist".

Roadworks on Market Street

The road is restricted as pedestrians are being forced to walk into the roadway. The reason is to allow for the construction of a new ramped access to the NatWest bank. The present entrance the bank on Clarendon Street is up steps. During the coronavirus pandemic restrictions people were queuing around this corner to visit the bank SJ9494 : Queueing at NatWest.

A Dalek in Hyde

As part of the monthly Artisan Market a Dalek and other replica stars of Dr Who and Star Wars were on Hyde Civic Squares. They were due to the work of Hyde Fundraisers Link

a volunteer group formed back in 1985 initially by a group of friends who had met at the Blackpool Dr Who Exhibition. They have a large range of SciFi props and costumes which they use during their tours around the country raising fund for various charities.
