The Watson ventilator replaced the kiln roof and cowl, and allowed more hops to be dried at once through a more controlled ventilation system. They were considered unattractive, and thus they were replaced with traditional conical roofs shortly after the photograph was taken. The Watson ventilator is a rare find now.
