Bank Road, Matlock
Bank Road is one of the steepest town streets in the UK with a gradient of about 1 in 5. Something of its steepness can be gauged in this view looking up from the junction with Bank Gardens. It is regularly used for competitive cycling hill climbs and between 1893 and 1927 it was served by a cable tramway apparently inspired by the cable cars in San Francisco.
Stile and steps to footpath to Denefields
The picture is taken from Steep Turnpike in Matlock. As you can see there are six steps up directly through the stile. The path takes you through to Denesfield an open space not far from the middle of town.
