Old salt pan, Crosscanonby This circular stone pit, called a kinch, was part of a post-medieval salt works. It would have been clay-lined, with a filter bed of reeds on the floor. Sand from the shore was air dried until it became caked with salt - a process called sleeching. The sleech was put in the pit and water added. The liquid was run off and poured over fresh batches of sleech, eventually yielding brine concentrated enough to boil down in iron pans to produce salt crystals.
