Thatchers Wood

Down Mill bridge on Milfields Way The bridge carries the lane from The Down to Eudon George across the Borle Brook. There is (or more likely was) an OS benchmark on the end of the sunlit parapet wall nearest to the camera, but it's either obscured by ivy/the fence, or the wall has been rebuilt since the mark was originally cut.

Thatchers Wood is a picturesque forest located in Shropshire, England. Covering an area of approximately 200 acres, this woodland is renowned for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The wood is named after a local farmer, Mr. Thatcher, who owned the land in the 19th century.

Thatchers Wood is predominantly composed of broadleaf trees, including oak, beech, and ash, which create a dense canopy that provides shade and shelter for a variety of wildlife. The forest floor is adorned with a carpet of vibrant wildflowers, such as bluebells and primroses, which bloom in the springtime, adding a burst of color to the area.

The wood is crisscrossed by a network of well-maintained footpaths, allowing visitors to explore and enjoy the natural surroundings. These paths lead to hidden glades and tranquil streams, creating a peaceful atmosphere that attracts walkers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers alike.

The forest is home to an array of wildlife, including deer, foxes, badgers, and a wide variety of bird species. Birdwatchers can spot woodpeckers, owls, and even rare migratory birds during the appropriate seasons. The woodland also hosts a diverse range of insects and small mammals, further contributing to the area's ecological significance.

Thatchers Wood is managed by a local conservation group, which ensures the preservation of its natural features and wildlife habitats. Educational events and guided tours are organized periodically to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this valuable ecosystem.

Overall, Thatchers Wood is a captivating woodland that offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature and experience the tranquility of the Shropshire countryside.

Bridleway across a field The right of way has been kept clear of wheat, but the ground was rock hard and very rutted. Isn't a full suspension mountain bike a wondrous thing?

The Down Inn A roadside pub that seems to be a popular eatery all week, with a car park that is often patronised. I'm sure people don't just park up, but enter for food and drinks too, so likely to be a good place. Great to see.
